Unzipping splitted .z01, .z02,… files under Mac OS X

A problem I had to face tonight, was to join and unzip a creepy horde of splitted ZIP files. I received them each by separate mail and their names were like “filename_split.zip” (main file), “filename_split.z01″, “filename_split.z02″, etc.

After having tried several apps like the default BOMArchiveHelper, StuffIt Expander, Unrar, Split&Concat and MacHacha I nearly tended to give up and extracting those ZIP files on a Windows Machine tomorrow. Luckily I found another hint on the web, stating that extraction should work with Mac ZipIt! (note that the download will give you a .sea file).

It turned out it really does.

Extract splitted ZIP with Mac ZipIt

Important note: do not unpack the ZIP file to the folder the segments are sitting in! Extract it to somewhere else. Or you will end up like I did in the first attemps, when ZipIt! asked me for segment #5 (I had only 4 of them) and I selected my main ZIP file – it stopped extracting with a nasty error message.

Mac ZipIt requests non-existing segment?

This shouldn’t happen, when you are extracting to a separate folder. When asked for the non-existing “last” segment (last segment index + 1), simply choose the main ZIP file you started extracting from. And boom – your content is there.

  1. Thanks a lot for this tip. It worked perfectly :D
Kind of an old app but it seems to work for these crappy windows files :-)

  2. when i’m starting unzipping i got error message saying ‘not enough space on the volume to store file ‘filaname”, but its size is 2gb and i have 40gb. what can i do?

  3. @keke: probably the content is more than 40gb when UNzipped? (actually I can hardly imagine that, but it may explain the error message you receive).

I would try to unzip it on a volume with more free space.

  4. Hey !

Thanks for this tip. I do have one question though… (it’s been a while since you posted, hope you’ll be able to answer anyway…)
I first had the same issue as keke, but I chose tu unzip directly on the Desk and then it worked. I had no problem concerning the .zXX files, but when I select the .zip file as my last file to unzip, I got and error message from ZipIt which says the file I’m about to unzip may be not valid or something like that, and when I press “Continue”, I get another error message “Error : -1708 Unable to handle AppleEvent”.

Could you help me please ?

  5. @Anonyme843 This sounds for me like ZipIt! is not compatible to the OS X version you are using… Unfortunately I do not have a ZIP-file for testing.

I recommend you contact the ZipIt! Support via help@maczipit.com (see their website for more information)

    Regards,
    Oliver
